Parotid gland - The parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands. It is found in the subcutaneous tissue of the face, overlying the mandibular ramus and anterior and inferior to the external ear.
Parotid duct - The parotid duct is also known as Stensen's duct. Saliva from the parotid gland passes through it to the mouth.
Stensen's duct - Stensen's duct is another name for the duct of the parotid gland that allows saliva to drain from the parotid gland to the oral cavity. It is named after Niels Stensen (1638-1686), a Danish anatomist credited with its discovery.
Serous glands - Serous glands contain serous acini, a grouping of serous cells that secrete a fluid, isotonic with blood plasma, that contains enzymes such as alpha amalyse. Serous glands are most common in the parotid gland, but are also present in the submandibular gland and, to a far lesser extent, the sublingual gland.
